That little gray pumpkin up there? Its like the size of, well, a small pumpkin, maybe 15 inches diameter and weighs 220 lbs total; Yeah, that’s 731hp. Seriously I am always amazed at how power dense turboshafts are. Turbomeca Arriel 1k1, there are 2 of them on this AW109 K2.

Now if only they weren’t so stupidly, stupidly expensive to operate.

Tradeoff is that turbines run efficiently at a steady speed and output, and can’t quickly adjust the way a piston engine can. So you either size it for the 30hp average you’re using, and have terrible acceleration, or you size it for the 400hp peak you want, and it spends its life at 10% output and awful efficiency.
Best use of a turbine in a car would probably be to charge an electrical system, so you could have constant efficient output from the turbine and vary the power you draw from the motors.

Guy I know builds turbines in boxes. Tiny turbofan in a very big box.

There was some dude in Miami when I was living there who stuffed one of those into the bed of an S-10 and made a drag truck.
Full of the sound of the Gran Fury, signifying nothing.

This reminds me of a newer ASU (air start unit) we had at the airport. The old ones were
the size of a small house and powered by a massive Diesel engine to drive the compressor. I lived a mile or so from the airport and I could hear loud and clear when the were using it. The new one was pretty much an aircraft APU on a small trailer, meaning a small jet engine. Loud, yes, but simple and efficient.
Giving ramp rats access to jet engines, no matter how small, was not really a good idea, and they didn’t last. These guys had no concept of warming up or cooling down a piece of equipment, especially not on one that cost a quarter million dollars. Their normal technique was just to smack the emergency shutoff when they were done using it, and this led to all sorts of maintenance headaches.
